What is it? According to the Medical Dictionary, ‘Meditation is a practice of concentrated focus upon a sound, object, visualization, the breath, movement, or attention itself in order to increase awareness of the present moment, reduce stress, promote relaxation, and enhance personal and spiritual growth.’
In simple terms, meditation is the process of calming and stilling the mind in any environment.
There are various forms of meditation and it may take some time to find the one that is right for you. People have been meditating for thousands of years, experiencing many benefits including a decreased heart rate, lower blood pressure and reduced stress levels.
As with yoga, no religious beliefs are needed in order to practice. There is no requirement for specialist equipment or clothing and it can be done anywhere you choose.
How do I do it? Follow this basic guide:
1) To begin with, establish a regular time that you will meditate. This can be weekly, increasing to daily over a period of time if you wish.
2) Give yourself ample time so that you do not feel rushed. You may want to start with just a few minutes and build up as you become more comfortable with the act of meditation.
3) If you cannot always be in the same location, just remember that all you need is yourself, wherever you are.
4) Make sure you are comfortable.
5) Focus on your breath.
